Rep. Menahan looks to strengthen FWP
ByOn Thursday, the House Fish Wildlife and Parks committee heard two bills sponsored by Rep. Mike Menahan (D-Helena). Both bills aim to improve wildlife management through improving both existing laws and species management authority.
HB 218, titled “Generally Revise Fish and Game Laws” would strengthen both FWP rules and the penalties imposed upon any individual in violation of Fish and Game laws. For one, HB 218 would include the use of headlights as illegal for the night spotting of animals. Second, those in violation of laws related to the trapping of furbearing animals would face increased penalties.
According to Rep. Menahan, “Montana has a long history of trapping, dating back to the Corp of Discovery Expedition. This bill aims to clarify state rules on the use of artificial lights and ensure our strong trapping heritage.”
Rep. Menahan’s second bill is HB 443, titled “Clarify FWP Authority to Manage Species.” HB 443 will better allow FWP to manage critical wildlife species and works to clarify the definitions of “nongame” wildlife and “management.” As wildlife in Montana is a valued asset, stronger FWP management authority over species is good policy.
Both bills have passed the House and are being scheduled for hearings in Senate Fish and Game.

"I think that it’s going to all work out, with the changes that we have agreed to. It’s not as much (spending for some programs) as I would’ve hoped, but apparently it’s more than other people wanted. As usual, we are trying to find the middle.”
"[On term limits:] You empower the executive, you empower the lobbyists and that's not good for the system because then we lose what the citizen Legislature brings.”
